I wanted to talk about this issue some more here, because when we posted the clip there was some contention about it. I (Ben) also want to do so because this show really is not only about entertainment, but information and progress.
Here are a few points I’d like to raise:
1. The President (as stated in the State of the Union address) recently began to empower the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. This group is tasked with the job of bringing charges against those who brought on the financial crisis. Although the Task Force was started in November of 2009, it is now being funded and staffed for increased action. If this group is successful, some of those who committed fraud and theft against the citizens of the US, both on an individual basis and at a systemic level will be arrested and charged. Will that justify the actions of the “crazy occupiers” to America? Will the people singing in that clip seem less like “whiny hippies” if they are proved right by the Task Force/US justice system? I think so.
2. Three years ago, Ohio congresswoman (D) Marcy Kapture began encouraging citizens to “squat in their own homes” if they were being foreclosed on. Way back in 2009 she said that the banks may not have the “paper” on people’s homes, and that unless the banks could produce actual proof that they owned the home they were trying to foreclose on, there was no reason to leave. Three years later, the Atourney General of New York has filed suit against the big banks in that state for using misleading information to make it seem that they had the authority to foreclose on homeowners when they did not. Are the protesters who are helping families stay in their homes despite banks’ insistence that they must leave justified? It appears so.

Our justice system is not always quick, and doesn’t always work correctly, but it does appear that it is catching up to Wall Street. I believe we will begin to see arrests. I believe that at least some of those who have been crushed by the greed of the few will find some protection and restoration.

Let’s not let our short attention spans get the best of us. What these few wealthy people did to America was evil. They took advantage of those with less resources than themselves, gambled with their money, hid their winnings, got bailed out, and told us it was our fault.

Maybe they’ll end up with Bernie Madoff. That’s better than what they deserve.
